As part of an exchange program, he led a group students from France on a tour of Japan and he took umbrage at their reaction to his capacity to debate in French. The intensity of case discussions acted as an English immersion process, including a dispute about the viscosity of ketchup. He surmounted the impediments to acclimating himself to a new language and culture and he assures international students that they too can accomplish this.

In his first class, Prof. Warren McFarlan welcomed the students to the School with a story of one of his classmate who built a multi-billion dollar business.
